Why I Started Writing Letters — And Why I'm Writing to You

There is something a screen cannot do.

It cannot carry the weight of a pen pressed into paper. It cannot hold the pause between one thought and the next, the moment when a writer stops, breathes, and chooses the exact right word. It cannot be folded, tucked into an envelope, and carried across miles to land in someone's hands like a small, quiet miracle.

A handwritten letter can.

My name is Wela, and I have believed this my whole life — not as a philosophy, but as a lived experience. My very first pen pal was my grandmother. She had a gift for making me feel seen and loved through every word she wrote. But she did something even more remarkable: she began writing to me in Spanish, gently teaching me her language one letter at a time. I wrote back in both English and Spanish, and without even realizing it, I was learning, growing, and connecting across generations and cultures.

She also inspired me to keep a journal — a place to pour out my thoughts, to process life, and to write to God, leaving the things beyond my control on His altar. That practice of writing became one of the most grounding, healing, and joyful parts of my life.

Now, I want to share that gift with you.

What This Blog Is

Letters from Wela is where I'll write to you between the letters. It's a place for stories about the art of correspondence, the joy of slowing down, the magic of bookish things, and the quiet power of feeling truly known by another person.

It's also where I'll share what's inspiring each month's letters — the themes, the books, the seasons, the small and beautiful things that make life worth writing about.

If you've ever felt the thrill of finding a handwritten envelope in your mailbox — or wished you would — you're in the right place.

An Invitation

Writing with Wela began with a simple but profound belief: everyone deserves to feel the warmth of a handwritten letter.

Each month, I write to my subscribers personally, sincerely, and from the heart. For those who choose our Pen Pal tier, I invite them to write back — and I read every word and respond. Because that's what pen pals do.

This is more than a subscription. It's a community. A reminder that in a world of notifications and noise, someone took the time to sit down, pick up a pen, and think of you.

I'm so glad you found your way here. I hope you'll stay a while — and maybe, one day soon, I'll be writing to you too. ✒️

With warmth,
Wela
