I want to talk to you for a minute.
Not about what you should do. Not about what you're not doing. Not about opening up or being vulnerable or any of the words that probably make you want to close this tab right now.
Just this: I see you.
I am a grandmother. I have sons. I have grandsons. I have watched the men I love carry things in silence that would have broken most people. I have watched them show up — to work, to family, to responsibility — day after day, without anyone asking how they were doing. Without anyone leaving space for the answer even if they had asked.
I know what it costs to be a man who feels things in a world that tells you feeling things is weakness.
It is not weakness. It never was.
You Were Never Supposed to Carry It Alone
Somewhere along the way, someone decided that strength meant silence. That a real man handles it. Figures it out. Doesn't complain. Doesn't need.
And so you learned to be quiet about the hard things. You learned to laugh it off, or work it off, or just — keep going. Because what was the alternative? Say something and get called soft? Say something and watch the people who depend on you start to worry? Say something and have it used against you later?
So you didn't say anything.
I'm not here to tell you that was wrong. I understand why you did it. I just want you to know — there is a cost to that silence. And you've been paying it for a long time.
This Is Not Therapy
I want to be clear: I am not acting as a therapist. I am not acting as a counselor. I am not going to give you a hotline number and call it a day.
I am a woman who writes letters. Who believes, with everything in her, that words on paper have a power that nothing else quite matches. That being heard — even by a stranger, even through ink and envelope — can do something for a person that no amount of scrolling or streaming or staying busy ever will.
Writing with Wela is not a mental health program. It is simply a place where you are welcome. Where no one is going to tell you to man up. Where no one is going to make you feel like a burden for having a hard day, a hard year, a hard decade.
It is just letters. And sometimes, that's exactly enough.
You Are Welcome Here
If you have ever felt like the world only wants you when you are useful — you are welcome here.
If you have ever kept something to yourself simply because there was no one to tell -- you are welcome here.
If you have ever watched someone else get the care and softness you quietly wished someone would offer you — you are welcome here.
You don't have to explain yourself. You don't have to perform anything. You don't have to be in crisis to deserve kindness, and you don't have to be okay to show up.
You just have to be willing to let someone think of you. To let a letter arrive in your mailbox that was written with you in mind. To let yourself, for one small moment, be on the receiving end of care.
That's it. That's all this is.
From Me to You
I started Writing with Wela because I believe everyone deserves to feel the warmth of a handwritten letter. And when I say everyone — I mean you too.
Not the version of you that has it all together. Not the version of you that everyone else needs. The real one. The one that's tired sometimes. The one that wonders if anyone notices. The one that keeps going anyway, even when it's hard, even when no one says thank you.
I notice.
And I'd love to write to you. ✒️
With respect and warmth,
Wela
